I’ve written quite a number of songs but never did I use the
F word in any of them. Not that I am conservative, wholesome or trying to be
responsible or, that I don’t want to be a bad influence… I could go on but the only reason I could
think of on how I’ve managed NOT to use the F word in any of the songs is that
I really just didn’t see the need for it… Nothing called for it, not even the
angry songs during my very early days.
Until recently, I surprised myself when I wrote a song that
is very light in demeanor and character and doesn’t impose on any dark emotions.
In fact, it’s very youthful and it has the potential to make you giggle. Somehow, though, I’ve managed to put the F
word somewhere in the first verse. If I
could help it, I don’t think I will deliberately put the F word in any song.
It’s just that I really felt the need to put it in this time around. But trust
me, it is not meant to offend. Well, here’s the demo recording of the song. You judge.
It wasn’t a big deal, at first, but two of my radio jock
friends who happen to like the song said they won’t be able to play it on the
air without bleeping the F word out. For some reason, I really don’t want it
bleeped because from my point of view, the song isn’t really saying anything
bad. The F word was just used to express an exaggeration. But rules are rules, I know…
The other thing is that, I’ve decided to produce this song
as a duet. So I asked one of my talents,
Kyle Wong of the Wonggoys to do it with me.
There was a bit of a concern because Kyle is a minor and I know I shouldn’t
be letting him near any song with the F word or his mom will kill me. (ha ha!)
So I guess the best win-win solution would be to make a
radio edit – a version without the F word - - so the radios can accommodate the
song and Kyle won’t have to look bad. But, since this song is going to be the
bonus track of the upcoming album, the original version - - the one with the F
word and all its glory - - will have to be the official album track. Wooot!
I can’t wait to go to the studio and work on this song. I
have this fascination with bands that have both male and female vocals like
Stars, The Weepies, Everything But The Girl and The Submarines. I like the
sound of both male and female voices, with extreme ranges, harmonizing together
effectively. The direction I’m targeting
is a non-traditional folk duet. It’ll be like Kyle and I are just having a
conversation.
This should be really interesting.
Watch out for “Smitten”.
Don’t you just love that word?
